Inside the outreach: meeting street children in Douala

Inside the outreach

Every week, AEMO teams walk the streets of Douala to connect with vulnerable children. These outreach rounds are the first link in our chain of protection.

Field work

Our specialized educators roam the neighborhoods of Douala — New-Bell, Akwa, Deido, Bonabéri — looking for street children. The first contact is always delicate: you have to earn trust, listen, understand.

"We never force a child. We come back, we talk, we share a meal. Trust is built over time." — AEMO Educator

Support stages

  • Identification and first contact on the street
  • Assessment of the family and social situation
  • Offer of shelter or open-environment follow-up
  • Personalized support and regular monitoring
  • Family mediation when possible

Results

Thanks to this patient and methodical work, hundreds of children are supported every year towards a better life. Outreach remains our most valuable tool for identifying and protecting Douala's most vulnerable children.
